    Saint Apollonia is one of four screenprints Andy Warhol created in 1984, portraying the Martyr Apollonia. Warhol based the image on a depiction of the Catholic saint from Piero della Francesca’s mosaic altarpiece. This work stands out as a rare nod to Warhol’s Catholic upbringing and his complicated relationship to organised religion in his adulthood. Warhol appropriates the image of the traditional icon into a gaudy Pop Art masterpiece, placing the patron saint against a black background, which makes the bright yellow and blue lines Warhol added within the figure stand out. By mimicking the cracks of the original icon, Warhol presents us with a piece declaring itself as a historical artefact, not just a modern reinterpretation. 

    Warhol’s work reflects a Catholic imagination rather than a declaration of faith, where themes of guilt, suffering, death, and sacrifice are depicted as both religious and profoundly human experiences. These enduring struggles were as relevant in Warhol’s era as they were in second-century Alexandria.
