"Rather than a declaration of faith, Warhol’s work reveals a Catholic imagination."

Saint Apollonia is one of four screenprints created by Andy Warhol in 1984, depicting the Virgin Martyr Apollonia. Warhol's screenprint draws from an image of the Catholic saint, originally found in Piero della Francesca’s mosaic altarpiece. This print is a rare reference to Warhol’s Catholic upbringing, where he would be taken to mass three times on Sundays by his mother. Warhol’s exploration of martyrdom is distinctly contemporary, reflecting his complex relationship with faith despite his Catholic upbringing. Though he met Pope John Paul II in 1980, Warhol was open about his homosexuality, which complicated his connection to the Church. Rather than a declaration of faith, Warhol’s work reveals a Catholic imagination, where themes of guilt, suffering, death, and sacrifice are portrayed as both religious and deeply human experiences—enduring struggles that were as relevant in Warhol’s time as they were in second-century Alexandria.

At first glance, Saint Apollonia might seem like an unexpected muse for Warhol, an artist renowned for his focus on consumerism and celebrity culture in the latter half of the 20th century. However, the theme of suffering recurs throughout Warhol’s brightly coloured yet deeply complex work, as seen in his Death and Disaster series. Additionally, Warhol's fascination with modern celebrity worship led him to explore the roots of veneration by depicting Saint Apollonia, returning to the original concept of a revered icon.
