    Meaning & History
The celebratory red-gold background starkly contrasts with the light characteristics of the person. Even though Santa Claus lacks the vivid tracings and eye-catching colours that characterise Warhol's paintings, these features alone evoke a strong sense of nostalgia among viewers

Ten screen prints are included in Andy Warhol's 1981 portfolio Myths. The most well-known works of Warhol are his portraits of famous people, which include Mao, Marilyn Monroe, and others. In contrast to Warhol's classic work, the Myths series features a variety of made-up figures who only live in our imaginations and televisions. These characters come from our favourite films and TV shows, as well as the pages of our cherished fictitious tales and bedtime stories. A commonality among them all is that none of them follow reality; some are magnificent heroes, while others are the worst of villains; some have magical skills, while others live in a whole different realm. The print features a portrait of the well-known mythological character, Santa Claus, and is available in an edition of 200. Warhol's signature use of vivid hues and strong, expressive lines is seen in his rendering of Santa Claus.

Warhol's Santa Claus 266 perfectly embodies the glimmering, emotional brilliance of the famous, cheerful gift-giver. The guy gives us a kind, cheeky look as he peers out from behind his tiny spectacles. A good deal of the picture is covered by his white beard, which looks like a fluffy field of snow. The celebratory red-gold background starkly contrasts with the light characteristics of the person. Even though Santa Claus lacks the vivid tracings and eye-catching colours that characterise Warhol's art, these features alone evoke a strong sense of nostalgia among viewers. The precious character's charm and appeal are further enhanced by the inlaid diamond dust, a shimmering material.
