    Meaning & History
The print was made with Warhol’s iconic screen-printing technique. It allowed him to experiment further with bright colour and texture. His use of vibrant, eye-catching colour in this print draws attention to the extravagant beauty of the tiger

Siberian Tiger is a screenprint from Andy Warhol’s 1983 Endangered Species portfolio. The portfolio was commissioned by Ronald and Frayda Feldman. The gallerist couple were known for their environmental activism, so it is so surprise they would commission a series with such an important social cause behind it.

The screenprint depicts the Siberian Tiger, the largest tiger in the world, is a critically endangered species that is native to areas of Russia and northeastern China. Ten years before this series was created, President Nixon signed the landmark Endangered Species Act, which legally recognised endangered animals, and gave exposure to animal, such as the Siberian Tiger, which are in danger of extinction. In a typical Warholian nature, the tiger is rendered in a range of vigorous colours. The face of the tiger is depicted in an orangey-brown, reminiscent of the real thing, making it stand out against the dark backdrop. However, the animal is transformed into a pop culture icon through Warol’s rendering of dynamic touches of yellow, white, blue, and red, adding depth and texture to the piece. The most striking and eye-catching part of the piece is the piercing blue eyes of the tiger – we are unable to look away. The details around the features of the tiger show the skill of Warhol as an artist, whilst the subject matter shows a different side to Warhol. He is not merely an artist, he is a social activist.

The print was made with Warhol’s iconic screen-printing technique. It allowed him to experiment further with bright colour and texture. His use of vibrant, eye-catching colour in this print draws attention to the extravagant beauty of the tiger. The print makes us unable to look away from the warning Warhol is giving us about protecting this majestic creature, as well as the other animals depicted throughout the rest of the portfolio. It is no wonder that this series is so highly sought after, the prints are visually striking and bold, turning these animals into icons of popular culture.
