    Meaning & History
The work  features a picture of Donald Duck taken from an animated short propaganda film made in 1942 by Walt Disney Productions, encouraging the public to pay their taxes to support the American military during WW2.

The New Spirit (Donald Duck) is a screen print by Andy Warhol from his 1985 Ads portfolio. It features a picture of Donald Duck from an animated short propaganda film made in 1942 by Walt Disney Productions, encouraging the public to pay their taxes to support the American military during WW2.

Warhol's artwork serves as a "mirror" in the Ads portfolio, reflecting the impact of mass media on contemporary culture. The artwork for New Spirit emphasises this impact as a government marketing strategy. The design revolves around the well-known cartoon character, the beloved Donald Duck, and four reflections of him in a multi-framed mirror. The dynamic quality of this image is enhanced by the way Donald Duck is depicted striding across the poster. In addition to defining Donald Duck's body, Warhol's use of organic and expressive lines in blue and green signal an advancement in his screen printing technique from the "machine-like" look of his early prints, such the Campbell's Soup series. Donald has a broomstick draped over his back, seemingly as a tribute to Fantasia, another Disney animated film that came out three years before The New Spirit. Bright, clashing colours and softer lines reminiscent of crayon shading give the screenprint's historical aesthetic a lively, modern feel. Warhol elevates this 42-year-old propaganda film image of Donald Duck into a pop icon of the 1980s by using a highly saturated colour scheme. The 1980s were a time when people idolised Disney's artwork, so Warhol's reimagining of Donald Duck only served to emphasise how influential he was.
