    Meaning & History
The Star shows a crimson picture of Swedish actress Greto Garbo as Mata Hari. Garbo portrays a Dutch courtesan who is surreptitiously working as a German spy during World War I, and is based on a true event.

The Star by Andy Warhol is a part of his well-known Myths series created in 1981. The series consisted of ten prints that explored the myth-making process in American popular culture. One of the two portraits in the Myths series that shows a real person rather than a mythological character is shown in The Star. It displays a crimson picture of Swedish actress Greto Garbo as Mata Hari. Garbo portrays a Dutch courtesan who is surreptitiously working as a German spy during World War I, based on a true incident. She deceives French and Russian diplomats and officers into disclosing top-secret military intelligence by using her feminine charm; nevertheless, her plot is exposed quickly, and she is cruelly hanged for espionage. The image used as the basis for the print shows the actress in one of Warhol's iconic myths, where she is timelessly reincarnated and through the power of mass-media becomes a myth in unto herself.

The stunning Garbo is shown in The Star submerged in dark red and black hues. She sports low-hanging earrings that kiss against her shoulders and a bejewelled cap on. Her intense stare mesmerises us and challenges the audience to take a closer look. The woman in this print blends in with her surroundings, in contrast to other Myths works with bright, single-shade backgrounds that aid in emphasising the characters, like in Uncle Sam. Warhol uses a splash of icy blue eyeshadow and hints of white to highlight the subject's siren eyes and cherry lips, even though the image is just painted in one colour wash. The piece is glamourous, enchanting and sexy.

Myths is a classic example of Warhol's uncanny ability to identify the potent themes of the day. The pictures, which feature both fictitious characters like Superman, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Dracula, as well as beloved children's icons like Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus, capture the common perception of America's once fascinating and powerful history. Every figure in the Myths entire portfolio is intended to symbolise a distinct aspect of Andy Warhol's character. The collection was made by Warhol in the early 1980s, which was undoubtedly his most productive time. During this period, he created additional extraordinarily detailed pieces, and honed his screen-printing techniques.
