    Meaning & History

“Everybody has their own America, and then they have pieces of a fantasy America that they think is out there but they can’t see … You live in your dream America that you’ve custom-made from art and schmaltz and emotions just as much as you live in your real one.” Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol created Uncle Sam (F. & S. II.259), a signed screen print on Lenox Museum board, in 1981 from the Myths portfolio. The picture, which is part of a limited edition of 200, features an image of Uncle Sam, a fictional character that was made to represent the US government. Uncle Sam is best known for appearing on posters encouraging young people to enlist in the US army during World Wars I and II. Uncle Sam shows a slender man wearing a multicoloured top hat covered in the pattern of the American flag, and a swallow-tailed coat, depicted in Warhol's signature visual style. With the exception of his bushy eyebrows, styled white hair, and chin whiskers, his features are quite symmetrical, unwrinkled, and lack creases. He stares out at the observer with a neutral expression. In contrast to certain prints in the Myths series, such the ones featuring Dracula and Howdy Doody, which have darker backgrounds, Warhol uses a light yellow wash as a back drop to draw attention to the patriotic apparel colours of Uncle Sam. Additionally, he overlays the figure with gestural red and blue silkscreen accents across his face and torso—a method he regularly used to draw attention to the subjects of his images.  This composition captures how Uncle Sam is commonly perceived as a personified personification of the US, with the American flag's colours taking the main stage of the composition. This piece is one that is undoubtedly charged with the energy of America.

Warhol's Myths uses fictional protagonists to examine the subject of celebrity from an entirely new perspective. The majority of these characters are from well-known bedtime tales, allegorical stories, antiquated folklore, or beloved television series and motion pictures; they encapsulate the enchantment of America's enthralling and powerful past. Uncle Sam 259 is the one print that sticks out from the others. This print, a well-known representation of American patriotism, transcends popular culture and explores avenues into politics and propaganda. Uncle Sam emphasises the link between Warhol and America, especially with regard to his examination of American culture and daily life. Warhol irrevocably altered the cultural and artistic climate of the nation. His works of art perfectly capture the cultural issues that dominated post-World War II America: politics, the cost and beauty of celebrity, the commercialization of consumerism, death, mortality, and tragedy.
