    Meaning & History
VW wanted to market their cars towards America, and a big part of that demographic included the thousands of US Veterans looking for a good deal on a car.

Created in 1985 as part of his Ads Series, Andy Warhol pays homage to the bold and brilliant Volkswagen Lemon Car. Each piece within the Ads series explores the relationship between art and advertising, breaking the boundaries of what constitutes as ‘high’ art. Warhol blatantly points towards the extreme commercialisation of America and its consumer culture, poking fun at the way society is drawn to these bright and vibrant advertisements and the power they have over not only just consumer culture, but popular and visual culture. Volkswagen and the other pieces in the portfolio was commissioned and published by art dealer Ronald Feldman, who worked closely with Warhol on many projects in the 1980s.

In this print, the now-iconic shape of the VW car is conveyed in a fluorescent green, highlighted even further against the royal blue backdrop. Underneath the car is the centrepiece of the advertisement – ‘Lemon’, with text underneath selling the perfection and spotlessness of each vehicle, contradicting its title. The iconic ‘Lemon’ Volkswagen advert marked a turning point in advertising culture in late 20th century America. After the second world war, Volkswagen (VW) had a marketing issue; VW was created by, and therefore associated with, Adolf Hitler. The brand wanted to market their cars towards America, and a big part of that demographic included the thousands of US Veterans looking for a good deal on a car. As an attempt to solve this problem, VW chose a more humorous and self-deprecating kind of marketing. By ironically referring to their car as a Lemon (meaning a cheap foreign car), the self-deprecating advertising campaign was a success. This unusual and unexpected campaign changed the world of marketing forever. Like the Volkswagen brand advertising its cars, Warhol's Ad series serves as a form of advertisement for Warhol's artwork, and as a testament to his awareness of the aspects of consumer culture than shape our visual culture. It is arguably the quintessential Warhol portfolio.
