Created in 2024, Do You Think He Saurus? dates from an important early stage in Alma Singer’s practice, during a year marked by her first London exhibition at Andipa Gallery. Executed in acrylic on paper and signed in pencil, the work is unique in this format, although the artist has explored the composition in other forms. It exemplifies the combination of deliberately naïve imagery and linguistic humour through which Singer addresses everyday anxieties, relationships and the conventions of contemporary art.

A brightly coloured sauropod dominates the composition, its elongated green and yellow body extending almost across the width of the sheet. Palm trees, a radiant sun and loosely described clouds establish a simplified prehistoric landscape, while two diminutive figures peer cautiously from behind a tree at the right. Visible brushstrokes and uneven contours preserve the immediacy of the painting process, contrasting with the largely unworked white ground.

Across the upper edge, the handwritten question “DO YOU THINK HE SAURUS?” converts the scene into a visual pun. The phrase depends upon the sound of “he saw us”, connecting the text directly to the concealed figures and encouraging the viewer to interpret image and language simultaneously. Singer’s apparently spontaneous manner recalls the directness of children’s drawing, yet its awkwardness is purposefully maintained as part of a practice that questions established assumptions about skill, seriousness and artistic value.

Alma Singer is the working name of Cambridge-based artist Carla Nizzola, who adopted the pseudonym as a means of creating with greater freedom and candour. Her works frequently combine bold primary colours, handwritten statements and dry British humour, allowing apparently light-hearted images to introduce questions of confidence, identity and judgement. In Do You Think He Saurus?, the familiar world of childhood illustration becomes a concise study of looking and being seen, demonstrating how humour can carry both narrative and psychological complexity.
