Inspired by one of the most recognisable figures in popular culture, Damien Hirst’s Mickey imagines Disney’s iconic character through the artist’s distinctive visual language. Derived from a painting originally created at Disney’s invitation, the print transforms Mickey into a composition of brightly coloured spots, referencing Hirst’s celebrated Spot Paintings and the influence of Pointillism. Through the careful arrangement of circles of varying sizes and colours, Hirst reduces the character to its most essential forms while maintaining its immediate recognisability.

The work explores the relationship between fine art and popular culture, echoing the legacy of Pop Art pioneers such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, who also drew inspiration from Mickey Mouse. By appropriating a universally recognised symbol of entertainment and consumer culture, Hirst challenges traditional distinctions between high and low art. At the same time, the print celebrates Mickey’s enduring cultural significance. As Hirst has noted, Mickey remains a timeless icon whose appeal transcends generations, continuing to represent happiness, nostalgia, and the collective imagination of audiences around the world.
