    Banksy Applause

Banksy’s Applause (2006) was first released as a canvas work during the celebrated Barely Legal exhibition, held in a Los Angeles warehouse. Alongside the original canvas, 100 unsigned prints were produced and sold for $500 each, making the work highly sought after among collectors. Applause forms part of the iconic Barely Legal print set, which also includes GranniesTrolleysMorons, and Festival. Measuring approximately 80 x 112 cm, it remains one of the largest Banksy prints ever released. The artwork reflects Banksy’s continued engagement with political imagery, satire, and the visual language of contemporary warfare.

  • About Banksy Applause

In Applause, Banksy depicts a fighter jet positioned on the runway of an aircraft carrier, inspired by the widely circulated image of former US President George W. Bush delivering his “Mission Accomplished” speech following the invasion of Iraq. Flanking the aircraft are two air traffic controllers dressed in bright yellow high-visibility jackets, preparing the jet for take-off. One controller holds a sign displaying the word “APPLAUSE” in bold capital letters, echoing the cue cards used in television comedy shows to prompt audience reactions. Through this juxtaposition of warfare and entertainment, Banksy satirises the media spectacle surrounding modern conflict and political propaganda. Military imagery is a recurring theme throughout Banksy’s work, often combined with humour and irony to critique contemporary society. The composition highlights his ability to transform serious political subjects into visually striking and thought-provoking commentary.
