The Power of Flowers

Weekly or contract flowers is a floristry industry term for when a venue commissions a florist to design and install displays for their spaces - usually once a week. Moyses Stevens have a roster of discerning clients who collaborate alongside our talented team of designers to ensure every arrangement is perfectly tailored to brief.

All weekly flowers share a few common elements - for example, floral varieties will likely be led by the season, you won’t see a peony popping up in November! The chosen stems will also need longevity, they may be on display for up to a week in a room with little sunlight. This tends to be where the similarities end as each establishment will have their own wishlist of colours, themes and styles.

When it comes to classic, blockbuster designs, Mayfair’s iconic five-star hotel, The Connaught is a beacon of floral excellence. Often taking centre-stage in these large installations is the venue’s mahogany staircase - the lobby regularly sees huge floral transformations take place, whether it’s creating an opulent festive scene filled with scented fir and glowing glass ornaments or a display announcing the start of spring with garden-inspired tower of blossom branches and urns over-flowing with narcissus and tulips.

Contemporary spaces such as Nobu Portman Square sees the floristry design reflect the hotel's chic and calming atmosphere. Often mono-florals in striking shades make for an impactful sight, contributing to the space’s sculptural details. It’s important to note however that it's not just super-sized floral installations that have the power to set the tone - what might seem like a humble vase of flowers can help define first impressions - for example a trio carefully poised Birds of Paradise flowers will tell a different story to bundles of lilac that appear freshly clipped from the garden.

Which reminds us - flowers don’t just provide a fabulous feast for the eyes, their scent is a welcome reminder of the season - so whether you’re hopping from meeting to meeting or sinking into sumptuous sofa for afternoon tea, the heady aroma of lilac from the hotel lobby is a nudge from nature that early summer has arrived (even if the weather isn’t in agreement!)
