For four days last weekend (28-30 March), prints from around the globe jostled for space at the IFPDA Print Fair, now in its 32nd year. It coincided with the launch of Brooklyn’s Fine Art Print Fair which opened in the same city on the same weekend, following in the footsteps of the London Original Print Fair (20-23 March) across the pond, making March a prolific month for prints.

The fair returned to its beloved historic Park Avenue Armory venue after being hosted previously at the Javits Centre. The Art Newspaper reported that the aisles between the 75 stands thronged with visitors of all ages in an article titled ‘New York print fairs see new energy and an influx of new collectors’. The fair featured thoughtfully curated fine prints ranging from historical masterpieces to contemporary editions, showcasing works from more than 70 exhibitors of galleries and publishers that included artists of all generations. Conversations between artists, curators and collectors on various current topics in the art world populated the weekend, with speakers exploring the trending topics surrounding printmaking as a medium.

The New York-based multidisciplinary artist Mickalene Thomas was commissioned by the IFPDA to create a site-specific installation comprised of three-dimensional paper-pulp sculptures. The interesting installation allowed viewers to step into and immerse themselves into the artist’s 1970s inspired interior scene paintings, creating a 3D immersion.

Celebrating over 500 years of prints and printmaking, The International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) Print Fair is the largest and longest-running art fair dedicated to printmaking. Established in November 1991, The IFPDA inaugural Print Fair was initially held at the historical Seventh Regiment Armory on Park Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The fair is held annually each Spring, with all ticket proceeds benefiting the IFPDA Foundation, which significantly supports curatorial, exhibition, and research grants in the field of printmaking. Meanwhile, at the Brooklyn Fine Art Print Fair, 41 galleries exhibited as well as 28 artists and book makers and seven academic print departments.
