The gold version was created by Banksy in 2004 as a limited edition of artist proofs in four different colourways (approximately 22 each in a total edition of 88). Each print is individually signed and numbered by Banksy.
The gold version of "Girl with Balloon" is often interpreted as a commentary on the commercialisation of art and the relationship between art and money. Banksy's use of a precious metal like gold, which is often associated with wealth and extravagance, creates a juxtaposition with the young girl in the artwork who is reaching out for a simple and pure object like a balloon. Some see the artwork as a critique of the art world's obsession with financial value and the commodification of art.1of 33
