  • Banksy Donuts (Chocolate & Strawberry) Print meaning and for sale

    Banksy Donuts (Chocolate & Strawberry)

Banksy’s Donuts (2009) is a rare commercial-only work that did not originate as a street piece, distinguishing it from much of his early practice. First appearing as a canvas in pink, it was later issued as two print editions: Donuts (Chocolate) and Donuts (Strawberry), each released in an edition of 299 signed prints. The edition size is widely interpreted as a reference to Krispy Kreme’s closure of 299 stores during its 2007 financial difficulties. Through its satirical tone and pop-cultural imagery, the work reflects Banksy’s ongoing critique of authority, consumerism, and institutional absurdity within contemporary society.

  • About Banksy Donuts

In Donuts, Banksy depicts a street-food-style van transporting an oversized doughnut mounted dramatically on its roof, resembling a prized or highly protected commodity. Escorting the vehicle is a convoy of stern, formally dressed American police officers, presented with exaggerated seriousness as they guard the sugary cargo. The composition draws humour from the well-known cultural association between police and doughnuts, while simultaneously critiquing authority and the allocation of public resources. By portraying law enforcement as protectors of a trivial object, Banksy raises questions about priorities, institutional purpose, and self-serving systems of power. The work relies on visual irony to expose the contradictions embedded within authority structures. Police figures recur throughout Banksy’s oeuvre, including works such as Flying Copper and Have a Nice Day, where they are similarly used to interrogate legitimacy, control, and societal trust. Through Donuts, Banksy blends satire with cultural symbolism to challenge perceptions of power and governance.
