  • Beethoven (F & S. II 390)

Andy Warhol's Beethoven is a part of his Beethoven series, created in 1987, and is one of the most striking examples within this collection. This artwork encapsulates Warhol’s ability to merge the classical with the contemporary, transforming the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven into an icon of pop art.

The Beethoven series features a stylised portrait of the composer, derived from the famous 1820 painting by Joseph Karl Stieler. Warhol’s treatment of Beethoven’s image is consistent with his approach to other cultural icons, using bold outlines and vibrant colours to create a modern, almost electrifying version of the composer. By doing so, Warhol transforms Beethoven into a contemporary cultural icon, much like he did with Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.
