“I don’t think art should be only for the select few,” Warhol announced. “I think it should be for the mass of the American people.”

Golden Mushroom is one of ten flavours of Campbell’s soup chosen by Andy Warhol that feature in his 1969 Campbell’s Soup Cans II series. This portfolio was created the year after his inaugural soup can portfolio, and the soup can became a muse that Warhol repeatedly turned back to throughout the start of his career. Warhol’s talent as an artist and technical skill shines through in this series, as each piece is printed with such precision, it is as close as possible to the real thing.

To Warhol, anything could become art, as proven in this series. Warhol blurred the lines between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art through his use of subject matter, in turn making art that was approachable to the masses. He said himself, “You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A coke is a coke, and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good.” Like a Coca-cola, Warhol has chosen a muse that is eaten by all, no matter what wealth bracket.

This demonstrates Warhol's capacity to shatter the elitist barriers around knowledge of art history. Reclaiming a symbol of everyday American life is a perfect method to create art that is accessible to the majority of contemporary Americans. By elevating the humble soup can to the status of "high art," he is making fun of the elitist standards of the art world. To Warhol, a piece of art is just as much of a commodity as an ordinary soup can.
