Campbell’s Soup Cans II: Vegetarian Vegetable is a screen print created by Andy Warhol in 1969 which forms part of his iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans II portfolio containing ten newer flavoured soups produced by the American food company Campbell’s. Based on his original 1968 portfolio, Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol returned to the iconic soup cans one year later, employing an improved an innovative screen print technique to achieve a more precise reproduction.

As a result, the portfolio represents Campbell's original design as accurately as possible and is as near to the original as possible. Warhol investigated consumerism and our relationship to it throughout his career. Drawing inspiration from commonplace objects, Warhol transformed mass-produced goods into works of art that blurred the boundaries between mainstream culture and more esoteric endeavours. The fact that Campbell's soup has become a popular comfort food option for many individuals is one aspect of the portfolio's lasting influence. There is a flavour for every taste and occasion, whether it is a warm bowl of soup on a chilly day or a quick and simple dinner alternative. This democratisation of food — with more options and simpler access due to its affordable price—is the perfect representation of Warhol's strategy of democratising art through recreating recognised products that millions of Americans would be acquainted with, rather than conforming to the elitist and conceptual Abstract Expressionism that was popular during this time.

Along with this, Warhol's grasp of the art market and the connection between commerce and art is demonstrated by the soup can series. He poses the following question why not market replicas of items that are currently for sale if people are willing to purchase and trade paintings as valuable commodities in the art market? Warhol deftly challenges ideas about what constitutes excellent art, raising a common and instantly recognised soup can to the creative level of an Old Master painting.

Drawing inspiration from commonplace objects, Warhol transformed mass-produced goods into works of art that blurred the boundaries between mainstream culture and more esoteric endeavours.
