    Andy Warhol Carter Burden (F & S II.156)

Carter Burden (1977) is a screenprint by Andy Warhol portraying New York City Council candidate Carter Burden. Created during a decade when Warhol frequently intersected with political figures, the portrait reflects the ongoing dialogue between art, media, and public office in his practice. Known for his vividly coloured Pop aesthetic, Warhol makes a striking departure here, presenting Burden in monochrome. The result is a portrait that feels both contemporary and historically resonant, underscoring the complexity of image-making within political life.

  • About Andy Warhol Carter Burden

Unlike Warhol’s brightly hued depictions of figures such as Jimmy Carter, this portrait of Carter Burden is rendered in stark black and white. The restrained palette lends the work a classical gravitas, perhaps alluding to Burden’s distinguished lineage as a descendant of the Vanderbilt family, prominent during America’s Gilded Age. Slightly turned and framed in tonal contrast, Burden appears poised and reflective. The monochrome treatment evokes early photographic traditions, recalling nineteenth-century daguerreotypes while remaining unmistakably modern in composition. As with his portrayals of Mao, Edward Kennedy, and Lenin, Warhol probes how political identity is shaped through visual representation. Here, however, he tempers Pop exuberance with a measured austerity, aligning subject and style in a quietly powerful meditation on heritage and authority.
