Andy Warhol Dollar Sign Quad (F & S II.282)
Meaning & History"American money is very well-designed, really. I like it better than any other kind of money. I’ve thrown it in the East River down by the Staten Island Ferry just to see it float" - Andy Warhol
Dollar Sign Quad is a unique screenprint executed by the artist in 1982, part of Warhol's wider Dollar Sign series. The Dollar Sign is amongst the Pop artist's most totemic, brazen, and visually alluring symbols of the artist's career.
In Warhol's quads of the dollar sign, as seen in the present print, the artist employs seriality and repetition - a favourite method - to hypnotic effect.
The dollar sign explores the inseparabibility of money and modernity. Throughout all of Warhol's ouevre - from his portraits of Marilyn Monroe to his silkscreens of Campbell's Soup Cans, is the undercurrent of consumerism. At this late stage in the Pop giant's career, he turned to the direct, semiotic expression of consumerism itself as a subject.
