    Electric Chair (F&S II.77) is a 1971 screenprint from Andy Warhol’s electric chairs series, which is a component of his larger Death and Disaster portfolio. This series explores the darker facets of the latter half of the twentieth century, shedding light on American society’s obsession with death and disaster as mirrored in media consumption. This series is arguably the darkest within Warhol’s Death and Disaster portfolio, featuring a stark symbol of death set against his vivid Pop art palette of bright and garish shades of yellow and blue.

    This series highlights the hypocrisy of attitudes towards death and disaster within the 20th century. The deadpan attitude of the print, which speaks of no moral tone or emotion is heightened by such a dark subject matter depicted in an ironically bright and cheery manner. This juxtaposition makes the print even more provocative.
