Flowers (F & S II.66)
“I always notice flowers,”
Andy Warhol published this groundbreaking flower portfolio in 1970. This is one of ten prints in the portfolio, and presents a version of a hibiscus flower that’s depicted in high-contrast, psychedelic hues. Andy Warhol once said ‘I always notice flowers’, and this expression shines through in this portfolio. Warhol returned to flowers as a muse later on in his career, created a colour and black and white series of hand drawn flowers, harking back to his origins as a commercial illustrator.
This print is a repurposing of a photograph of four hibiscus flowers, taken by Patrcia Caulfield in 1964 from an issue of Modern Photography for Flowers. The print depicts these four flowers as otherworldly. They are depicted in a splash of orange, yellow and magenta, each colour brighter than the previous. The flowers are placed on a background of lurid green grass. Despite being an image of perhaps one of the most natural subject matter possible, Warhol as transformed the natural into the artificial.
In this portfolio, Warhol is openly mocking the Abstract Expressionism movement. That artistic movement called for a more symbolic depiction of visceral human emotions and expressions, but here Warhol takes it one step further. These flowers are not emotional or romantic, Warhol removes and detail or realism altogether, presenting us with a flower that seems mechanised and artificial, rather than expressive. As Nina Zimmer argues, ‘‘Warhol reduced and radicalised his Flowers to such an extent that the banal subject matter was now transformed into a powerful pictorial concept. The directionless format contributed to this: the pictures can be read in all directions; like an abstract painting, top and bottom, left and right, have been revoked.’’
