    Andy Warhol Ladies and Gentlemen 2 (F & S II.127)

Ladies and Gentlemen 2 (1975) is a powerful screenprint by Andy Warhol that shifts his focus from political leaders and celebrities to an anonymous yet vibrant community at the heart of 1970s New York subculture. Portraying a drag queen, the work forms part of the celebrated portfolio of the same name, in which Warhol produced a series of bold and expressive portraits of members of the LGBTQ community. By granting these sitters the same monumental treatment as his society figures, Warhol expanded the boundaries of portraiture and representation in Pop Art.

  • About Andy Warhol Ladies and Gentlemen 2

Created in 1975, Ladies and Gentlemen 2 emerged from Warhol’s immersion in New York nightlife. He frequented venues such as The Gilded Grape and, encouraged by Italian dealer Luciano Anselmino, began photographing the dynamic personalities he encountered. Using Polaroids as source material, Warhol translated one sitter into a composition defined by loose contour lines and bold, collage-like blocks of primary colour. The vibrant palette evokes theatrical drag makeup while foregrounding individuality and performance. Though less immediately recognisable than his portraits of Marilyn Monroe or Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, this series is no less significant. It reflects Warhol’s evolving direction in the mid-1970s, where experimentation in colour, composition, and subject matter intersected with issues of visibility, identity, and empowerment.
