Ladies and Gentlemen (F & S II.129)
“I wonder whether it’s harder for 1) a man to be a man, 2) a man to be a woman, 3) a woman to be a woman, or 4) a woman to be a man. I don’t really know the answer, but from watching all the different types, I know that people who think they’re working the hardest are the men who are trying to be a woman. They do double-time. They do all the things: they think about shaving and not shaving, of primping and not primping, of buying men’s clothes and women’s clothes. I guess it’s interesting to try to be another sex." Provocative and direct, Ladies and Gentlemen is a collection of 10 screenprints created by Andy Warhol in 1975. Up to this point, the subject matter of Warhol’s art was predominantly popular culture based, depicting consumer goods like soup cans, or stars such as Marilyn Monroe. However, Warhol’s foray into the often-unseen lives of Black and Latinx trans women and drag queens offered an opportunity for acceptance, shining a spotlight of admiration into their world. By taking polaroids of the sitters himself, Warhol was able to intimately capture the personal spirit of each sitter within each screenprint.
The sitter within this screenprint has been identified as Alphanso Panell. Perhaps one of Warhol’s favourites out of the sitters, Warhol made 60 paintings out of 7 polaroids taken of her. Unfortunately, like many of the sitters, not much is known about her, but a kind and warm character radiates out the screenprint. The co-founder of the Hot Peaches theatre company Jimmy Camicia described that, ‘many years ago, while walking with Marsha [P. Johnson], she stopped to talk to Alphanso… They were friends. My impression was that she was very soft spoken, gentle and kind.’ Panell looks to the side, and we are immediately drawn to her eyelashes, emphasised by a dash of bright yellow, which also mimics the exaggerated eyeshadow of drag queens. This is echoed by the dash of red across the lips, acting almost as a caricature to the makeup of transgender women, and emphasising the non-conformity to gender through a materialisation of femininity.
