Andy Warhol Paloma Picasso (F & S II.121) For Sale

Paloma Picasso is a screenprint portrait created in 1974, depicting the fashion designer and daughter of the artist Pablo Picasso, Paloma. It was published in the portfolio America’s Hommage a  Picasso.  

In this image, coloured rectangular blocks obscure Paloma’s left eye, recalling the Cubist style for which her father’s work was known. The side of her face that is shown is eye-catching as one eye directly meets the gaze of the viewer. 

Despite the work being published in honour of Picasso – Warhol stated in Interview Magazine: ’I never think about Picasso, I just think about Paloma’. Warhol’s Paloma is a special one in his series of portraits as the pair had a close friendship, attending many events together and confiding in each other. Yet artistically, Paloma also served as the perfect muse. With such a famous last name, Paloma sought to create her own creative legacy, and was known for her jewellery designs for Tiffany & Co.  

As with many of Warhol’s portraits each sitter embodied not just the person but their very essence that they represented of the period. Approaching the mid-seventies, Warhol’s Paloma hints at the non-conformism and feminist mindset of the time, against a backdrop of high fashion.
