    Medium:  Screenprint on one hundred polystyrene boxes in ten colors, each 2 x 2″, each screenprinted with a portrait of one of the ten artists in the portfolio “Ten from Leo Castelli.”
    Edition: 200, 25 lettered A-Y. A small initial and number are incised on a box printed with Warhol’s portrait.

    Meaning & History
    Portraits of the Artists is an homage to Warhol’s strong lineage in Modern Art and inseparability from the New York art scene.

    Portraits of the Artists, created in 1967, is comprised of one hundred polystyrene boxes in ten colours, each line of colour featuring portraits of a different artist. The artists included giants of Pop Art and abstraction such as Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella, as well as the artist himself.   

    The object encompasses some of the most salient features of Warhol’s ouvre: repetition, vivid colour and portraiture. It is also an homage to Warhol’s strong lineage in Modern Art and inseparability from the New York art scene. Roy Lichtenstein and Warhol’s work were both exhibited at the Leo Castelli gallery, renowned for its ground-breaking exhibitions of Abstract art.  

    Warhol, well known for referential artworks and subjects, references his predecessors across his works, most notably in Joseph Beuys and Details of Renaissance Paintings including Leonardo Da Vinci, Piero Della Francesca, Sandro Boticelli and Paul Uccello. Explore Andy Warhol prints for sale.
