Get Out While You Can was published in 2004 by Pictures on Walls and is a screen print by Banksy that, along with ‘Because I’m Worthless’ and ‘Welcome to Hell’, forms part of what is known as the Placard Rat series.

The Placard Rats series shows indignant rats holding up protest signs that say, in this version, “Get Out While You Can”. Others have the phrases, “Welcome to Hell” and ‘Because I’m Worthless. Wearing a necklace with a peace sign, the rat is engaging in a protest. Against who we wonder? Could it be against the ruling classes? Is the rat’s comment about escaping the rat race and being a wage slave?

In the artwork, at first glance, there is only simple imagery, yet again Banksy’s typical wit and interest in social commentaries shines through to dramatic effect, and causes us to ask ourselves what should we really be escaping from?
