As part of Roy Lichtenstein's Nude series, Two Nudes (1994) represents one of six images and three states exploring female figures in his later career. In contrast to traditional depictions of nudes, these women are entirely fictional creations rather than based on live models. By revisiting his comic girl characters from the 1960s and undressing them, Lichtenstein employs new techniques for this series. While he continues to use hand-cut stencils, which produce imperfect dots and repetitive patterns, he also integrates computer-generated dye-cut stencils through Swan Engraving to refine the dots and patterns.
Two Nudes presents an intimate interior scene featuring two women, with only one visible as she tenderly consoles the other. The depiction reveals themes of eroticism and subordination within a cultural context that commodifies and objectifies women. The viewer is invited to engage in voyeuristic observation through reflections, shadows, and an open windowpane in the background.
