Inaugural Print, 1977, by Roy Lichtenstein is the artist’s contribution to the Inaugural Impressions Portfolio, published by the Democratic National Committee to mark the occasion of President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration. It is a screenprint on Arches 88 paper; a signed edition of 100.
Inaugural Print is one of the pop artists most mysterious and referential artworks: the abstract composition pays homage to American cultural history yet also wittily references the layout of old political propaganda posters. Instantly recognisable in the intricate print is the raised hand in the foreground, reminiscent of the swearing in ceremony, as well as the white stars and blue background of the American flag in the background; symbols of American democratic structure and national identity.
Inaugural print is rendered in the artist’s characteristic vibrant hues, crisp black and whites and sharply defined composition: Lichtenstein immerses the viewer in a contemplative discourse of cultural tradition and change.
