Edition of 182 with Arabic numbering, together with a number of H.C. "Hors Commerce" proofs and E.A. (artist proofs). Inspired by the painting of the same title in the collection of a private collector.

After Study for Self-Portrait depicts a distorted figure sat on a chair with a more relaxed body language in a liminal, timeless space. Unlike the howling intensity of Bacon’s previous work, this print uses a softer colour palette of blue and sandy yellow.

Throughout his career, Bacon often used geometric forms and spaces to "contain" his subjects. However, in this print the figure appears to sit calmly within an undefined space, suggesting a less claustrophobic, more open psychological environment. The subtle framing effect powerfully evokes a sense of introspection within the figure, but without the oppressive weight or claustrophobia seen in Bacon’s earlier works.

Furthermore, the sense of calmness and restraint through subtle gestures and softer tones offers a nuanced expression of introspection and reflection on life and death, moving away from the aggressive and visceral distortion of his earlier works.

Whilst the self portrait may not be as dark or brutal as others, Bacon’s lifelong engagement with mortality and the fragility of life still lingers. The slightly blurred features suggest the transient nature of existence, a nod to the inevitable passage of time and decay that always haunted Bacon’s oeuvre.
