In the central panel of after Triptych 1987, Bacon masterfully uses colour to heighten the emotional and psychological intensity of the work. The bold, vivid orange that frames the central figure creates a sense of urgency and tension, symbolising chaos and internal turmoil. This contrasts with the cool, soft blue background, which evokes feelings of detachment and isolation, emphasising the figure’s alienation.

The distorted, grotesque figure, rendered in fleshy, sickly tones, stands out against the contrasting colours, highlighting the vulnerability and decay of the human body. The dark grey-green tones at the bottom of the panel ground the composition and suggest themes of decay and death, contributing to the oppressive atmosphere.

Bacon’s use of blurred colours in the grey-green area adds a sense of fluidity and ambiguity, reinforcing themes of instability and transformation. The intense and contrasting colours in the piece may also reflect Bacon's personal struggles with identity and sexuality, symbolising his internal conflict and emotional turbulence. Overall, Bacon’s strategic use of colour amplifies the psychological impact of the work, immersing the viewer in a disturbing, emotionally charged landscape.
