Edition of 50, iPad drawing inkjet print on paper, signed, numbered and dated on the front.

David Hockney's Tulips in a Glass Vase belongs to a series of floral still lifes created daily by Hockney during 2021, a period shaped by the global pandemic. Using his iPad as a primary tool, Hockney explores how digital media can reimagine traditional subjects, translating the immediacy of observation into fluid, bold marks. The device allows for directness and spontaneity in his process, evident in the lively handling of colour and form that animates each petal.

The work depicts a vibrant arrangement of tulips in a cut glass vase, rendered with expressive digital brushstrokes and a rich, lively colour palette. The composition captures the interplay of light and shadow as it refracts through the glass, lending the flowers a sense of luminosity and presence. Beneath the vase, a checkered tablecloth introduces texture and depth, its geometric pattern forming a counterpoint to the organic forms of the blooms rising through the centre of the picture. Hockney transforms a simple still life into an exploration of perception, light, and the possibilities of digital art. The work celebrates both the beauty of everyday objects and the potential of contemporary technology to renew a long-standing artistic tradition, demonstrating how the ordinary can be made extraordinary through careful attention and inventive technique.
