David Hockney's Untitled 778 (Cherry Blossom) is a vibrant digital composition originally created on an iPad and later produced as an inkjet print on cotton rag archival paper in 2019. Part of Hockney’s celebrated My Window series, the work captures a view from the artist’s window, translating an everyday scene into a lively exploration of colour, light, and seasonal change.
The composition is dominated by bright pink blossoms that fill the foreground, their clustered forms guiding the viewer’s eye toward a house with a bold red roof set against a soft blue sky. Hockney’s warm digital brushstrokes and energetic palette create a sense of intimacy and immediacy, transforming a simple domestic view into a vibrant celebration of spring. The layered colours and fluid marks evoke both the spontaneity of drawing and the luminous qualities made possible through digital tools.
In this work, Hockney demonstrates how contemporary technology can reinvigorate traditional subjects such as landscape and seasonal observation. His embrace of the iPad allows for a direct and intuitive approach to image-making, blending the immediacy of digital media with the distinctive colour and compositional clarity that characterise his practice. Through this combination, My Window. No. 778 reflects Hockney’s fascination with the everyday world and his ability to reinterpret it through a fresh, modern visual language.
