Commissioned by Italian art dealer Luciano Anselmino, Andy Warhol was tasked with creating a collection of 'impersonal' and 'anonymous' photographs of 'transvestites.' Anselmino specified that the subjects should not be high-profile members of the gay community or women who strongly resemble cisgender women. This anonymity was preserved until 2014, when the Andy Warhol Foundation revealed the identities of 13 out of the 14 sitters. Thus, the "Ladies and Gentlemen" portfolio was born, published in 1975.
The sitter in this screenprint has been identified as 'Iris' by Corey Tippin, a friend of Warhol who knew her by name, though little else is known about her. Despite her lingering anonymity, Iris's presence and character resonate strongly through the screenprint. She is photographed in profile, with her head tilted upward, revealing sculpted cheekbones. Blocks of teal, brown, and purple are layered over her face and body, reminiscent of a collage. A purple block over her eye draws attention to her long, feminine eyelashes, while a hint of peach on her lips further emphasises her femininity. The contrast between the photographic realism of the screenprint and the unrealistic colours creates an intriguing dialogue between reality, fantasy, and performance, highlighting the complex identities of these sitters.Publications
