David Hockney Eine (Part I)
‘If we are to change our world view, images have to change,’ Hockney
David Hockney’s Eine is the first part of the trilogy sequence, Eine, Deux and Tres created in 1991, a later series in his oeuvre, which evolves many of his pre-eminent techniques and his artistic language.Eine is a signed lithograph, one of an edition of 35, which fits the same abstract, fragmented collage style of the other two compositions in the series. The large scale print actually portrays a lake and river, redolent of Hockney’s obsession with nature and natural forms: although in this depiction it has been so overlaid by rigid and geometric forms it is difficult to ascertain the original source. The print is executed in a muted palette of deep blues and grey tones, the black planes add depth to the image, in which an abstracted image made up of jagged lines and geometric shapes overlooks the riverbed and grass created from a sweeping array of dots and swift lines. Is this a staged set scene, a rejection of a conventionalist natural vista or an abstract, cubist inspired image – probably a convergence of all three. -
