'Hockney’s portrayal of his mother is depicted simply but imbued with such emotional resonance, Laura Hockney somehow becomes a universal figure, capturing the parent, child bond for all.'

David Hockney’s Portrait of Mother I, 1985 is one of two portraits in the Moving Focus series, in which the artist depicts his beloved mother, Laura Hockney. Portrait of Mother I is a signed lithograph, one of an edition of 25.
‘The whole point of me making art is to spread a little bit of love,’ Hockney once commented and his depiction of his mother is, arguably, the most intimate of all his portraiture, in which he conveys his maternal and emotional attachment to her through multiple layers.
Portrait of Mother I is the more naturalist depiction of his mother as opposed to Portrait of Mother II which explores his cubist influences in greater depth. In Portrait of Mother I, Hockney utilises his naïve pencil crayon drawing style evolving it through tone and texture and transforming the medium onto lithograph.
In Portrait of Mother I, an elderly woman sits in a high-backed armchair, which is covered in a pale green sparse pattern. Whilst her rosy, plump toned facial features are the most striking, we can see her upper body clothed in a bright verdant cardigan with white frilly collar and hem. She is wearing a to-the-knee skirt, visible in pale grey and her hands are neatly clasped on her lap.
This lithograph is reminiscent of Celia with Green Hat, a portrait of another close subject, his longtime friend Celia Birtwell, he utilises his naïve style to create expression through exaggerated tone and features. Her rosy face is inviting, expressed through her warm eyes and softly defined features. It is not the artist’s aim to be concerned with conveying the context or the narrative of the portrait: it is to express the warmth and emotional resonance of the central female figure in his life.
Like much of Hockney’s portraiture, Portrait of Mother I is an ode to past and present art forms: like his one of his influences, Van Gogh, Hockney aims to create not just a physical likeness but an aura, a three-dimensional portrait of womanhood including vulnerability, warmth, joy and sorrow.
Hockney’s portrayal of his mother is depicted simply but imbued with such emotional resonance, Laura Hockney somehow becomes a universal figure, capturing the parent, child bond for all.
