Hockney comments (1973), ‘I loved the idea of the rain as it hit the ink [and] it would make the ink run. The moment I thought of the idea I couldn't resist it.’

Rain is arguably the most famous artwork from David Hockney’s striking sequence, The Weather Series, 1973. It is one of the most closely associated with the Japanese woodblock printing tradition, u-kioye, which the artist referenced throughout the six lithograph series.
Hockney comments (1973), ‘I loved the idea of the rain as it hit the ink [and] it would make the ink run. The moment I thought of the idea I couldn't resist it.’
Indeed, Hockney developed many new innovative techniques whilst making Rain, to not only convey the weather condition, but to create a visceral and atmospheric effect around the depiction of it. The vibrant blue palette is immediately captivating and recalls Hockney’s famous representations of swimming pools.
Hockney severs the viewer’s expectation of what rain looks like by depicting it via a series of puddles made up of a series of concentric circles: slants of rain drip down, spilling out from the canvas edges as if to allow the viewer to be ‘soaked up’ into the atmospheric feeling of being caught in a downpour.
Rain is an all absorbing, abstract depiction, in which Hockney pushes the boundaries of his print technique and creative vision: for the first time he merges screen printing with lithograph and creates a dynamic masterpiece.
