In Sponsored by You, Grayson Perry unleashes a satirical roar at late-stage capitalism, casting his beloved Alan Measles as a swaggering, tax-dodging one-percenter racing through the playground of tech billionaires and global finance. Created as a conceptual pair with Selfie with Political Causes, this print presents the other side of the ideological coin: where woke virtue-signalling meets unapologetic greed.
Set against the glinting skyline of Silicon Valley, with Apple HQ looming in the background, Alan’s racing car is plastered with logos from notorious tax havens. Beneath the visual humour lies biting social commentary: the brakes read “Guilt,” the engine “Pure Greed,” and the roadkill under the tyres is “Social Mobility.” Hovering above, a bald eagle symbolises the hollow promise of the American dream - “Inequality” in flight.
The title, Sponsored by You, is a pointed jab at the uncomfortable truth: we, the public, often foot the bill for the lavish lifestyles of those who exploit financial loopholes. “It’s complete nonsense,” Perry says of the notion that wealth trickles down. Here, that myth is crushed under the wheels of a luxury supercar.
