Pop ‘Til You Drop brings together a collection of seminal works by artistic giants of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst and Banksy.
Capturing the vivid palette and subversive iconography of Pop-Art, the artworks featured across two floors in Andipa Gallery’s summer exhibition are sure to inspire. Placing Warhol’s monochrome Flower lithographs opposite Hirst’s resplendent, glittering butterflies (Zeitan, Suiko, Nur Jahan, Theodora) the exhibition traces the trajectory of Modern and Contemporary art. Visitors can see the direct influence of respective artists: for example, Hirst’s use of glitter is indebted to Warhol’s diamond dust prints, which were executed in the eighties.
Works by contemporary art’s enigmatic and iconoclastic trailblazer, Banksy, deal with the subject of consumerism and mass media: themes which defined ‘Father of Pop Art’ Andy Warhol’s oeuvre. Though distinctly British and executed with stencils rather than silkscreen, Banksy’s prints have much in common with his predecessor: their works speak directly to a mass audience and traverse the lines between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art. The visual language of works such as Barcode and 3D Rat is characterised by directness and humour. Barcode juxtaposes man-made materialism with the natural world, whilst 3D Rat is a witty portrayal that gives the rodent a taste for cinema.
Works by Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein demonstrate pop artists’ unparalleled and pure approach to colour and form: joyous yellows and reds and bold, broad lines populate Untitled IV B and Red Lamp.
