Andy Warhol's John Wayne depicts the macho starring guy of Hollywood's golden age. He was regarded as an all-American hero and frequently appeared in westerns and war films. A promotional picture from the 1962 motion picture The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance serves as the source image. John Wayne's notoriety entirely obscures the actor's true identity in this picture. When a reporter recounts John Wayne's character's narrative to his editor in the film, the editor responds, "This is the West, sir; when the legend becomes fact, print the legend." In this series, Warhol did just that.  Warhol captures Wayne in his iconic role in this portrait, embodying the tough and distinctly American figure he portrayed on screen: Wayne is depicted as a cowboy, holding a handgun to the right of the composition, and wearing a necktie and Stetson hat. Only a scowl is discernible due to the partial obscuration of his face. Repetitive images and vibrant colours are used by Warhol in his trademark manner, which is also evident in his other famous portraits, such as the Marilyn series. Wayne's famous image is enhanced by this approach, which also comments on how mass-produced celebrity images are in popular culture. This portrait was made in large part due to Warhol's renowned screen-printing method, which combines creative abstraction with photographic accuracy.

Warhol was making a statement about American culture and the idolization of movie stars when he chose Wayne as his subject. Wayne served as the ideal canvas for Warhol to investigate problems of celebrity, identity, and the creation of gendered cultural idols because he was frequently seen as a representation of conventional American notions of masculinity. Warhol's concern in the monetization of celebrity and the function of celebrities as consumer goods in the media-driven world of the 20th century is highlighted by this series. More precisely, Warhol decided to depict archetypal characters and symbols that embody America's romanticised and ahistorical perspective of the American West in the Cowboys and Indians series.
