Keith Haring Untitled (Littman p.50)
Meaning & History"Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic." - Keith Haring
Untitled 1985 is a silkscreen print created by Haring in 1985. Playfully coloured and bursting with energy, the present work has much in common with his famous Growing portfolio (1988).
In a polychromatic tableau of unity, Haring’s signature matchstick men of different sizes interact and interlink with each other. Two green figures rest on the shoulders of a larger red person, meanwhile a central blue figure below holds onto two others. With the appearance of a human pyramid – an image that Haring later revisit in ‘People ladder’ from Growing, the artist puts forward a message of hope, peace and love which he is most celebrated for.
Originally born into a Christian family, in Haring’s youth he was briefly associated with the hippie ‘Jesus Movement’. Later breaking away from organised religion, Haring would maintain an interest in spirituality but focus his efforts on delivering his humanist message through the power of art. In his own words, ‘Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic.’
