Untitled (Cup Man) is a silkscreen print created by the artist in 1989. It is a colourful work that brilliantly demonstrates the visual iconography for which the artist is widely celebrated. The print was included in a portfolio called titled the Kinderstrern (star for children), featuring works by twenty-two artists.
In the composition, a disembodied lower body, gigantic in size, contains two torsos from which a face and upper body emerge. Haring’s sunflower yellow figure is rather like a matryoshka doll, and this morphing of human and object is distinctive in the artist’s work. Bold lines surround the man, suggesting movement and pent up energy: the character’s outstretched arms further suggest the summoning of strength.
Untitled is a suitably vivid and playful work for its submission to the children’s charity for which the portfolio was intended.
