The first from Roy Lichtenstein’s Surrealist series, A Bright Night, made from lithograph on Arches 88 paper, is from an edition of 38 and signed, dated and numbered.
The dreamlike print depicts Surrealist elements through Lichtenstein’s signature Pop style motifs. A crescent moon humorously features a nose and red lips, as Lichtenstein playfully humanises the night sky elements with cartoon-style motifs, that also include sealife elements such as a starfish and anchor, that are surreally blended in. An array of stripes in contrasting primary colours, alongside a solid section of vivid yellow to capture the moon, adds to the layered, thronging treatment of colour within the print.
Before embarking on the Surrealist series prints, Lichtenstein carefully planned his compositions through multiple detailed sketches. Studies for A Bright Night included preliminary drawings in his sketchbook as he prepared the composition. -
