    Roy Lichtenstein’s Cathedral #2 is from his wider Cathedral series that consists of eight prints including two state editions, which was compiled in 1968. 

    Based on Claude Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series painted in the 1890s, Lichtenstein replaced Monet’s brush with Benday dots. The Pop artist devised the series whilst working from photographs of Monet’s oil paintings which were painted by the Impressionist at the site of the cathedral over two years. The recurring singular subject allowed Monet to capture the shifting state of light and its variations of colour through seasons and at different times of day. Lichtenstein responded by recreating various hues of light through a bold colour palette in his screenprinted series. 

    Cathedral #2, which is signed and dated in pencil in the lower right, was created from two aluminium plates in red and blue. The combination of blue and red Benday dots appears almost indecipherable up close, evoking a trickery of the eye with the printing technique. The resulting effect of a mass-commercialised impact to evoke the illusion of mass-printing methods is in stark contrast to Monet’s oil paintings.
