Roy Lichtenstein Haystack #2 (Corlett 66)
"Lichtenstein’s Haystack #2 is populated with stark dark red and black Benday dots, each carefully placed to give the print a static, fixed effect in contrast to the suggestive movement evoked by Impressionist Monet’s brushstroke".
Based on Claude Monet’s series of the same name painted 78 years earlier in 1890-1, Roy Lichtenstein’s modernist Haystack series of ten similarly depicts stacks of harvest as a means to explore the ever-evolving interplay of light.
The repetition of Monet’s single haystack subject allows light to play the central theme, with the soft golden glow illuminating contrasting colours in each of his paintings. In response, Lichtenstein’s Haystack #2 is populated with stark dark red and black Benday dots, each carefully placed to give the print a static, fixed effect in contrast to the suggestive movement evoked by Impressionist Monet’s brushstroke.
From an edition of 100, Haystack #2 is a lithograph and screenprint in red, black and white that was produced on Rives BFK paper, with each print inscribed ‘R Lichtenstein 69’.
