  • Roy Lichtenstein Haystack #3 (Corlett 67)

    "The hand painted dots appear irregular in their spacing and overlap in areas, which builds up a density and concentration in some sections, adding tonal variation". 

    In 1969, Roy Lichtenstein created a series of works titled Haystack, which paraphrased Claude Monet’s series of the same name created in 1890-91. The result is an iconic Impressionist work reappropriated through a Pop Art lens. From an edition of 100, the series comprises seven lithographs with screenprinting and one with embossing. Each is inscribed ‘R Lichtenstein 69’ in the bottom right.

    Monet’s Impressionist painting series depicted harvested wheat, repeating the same subject to portray the manifold effects of natural light during different seasons, times of day and weather conditions. Lichtenstein reappropriated this approach in his series of ten which runs from morning in yellow (Haystack #1), to midnight (Haystack #7) using the same singular subject. 

    This print, Haystack #3, is a portrayal of harvest in the late hours of the afternoon. It fuses blue and black Benday dots which gives the impression of a colder climate; the white dots possibly emblematic of snow. The mechanical reproduction of Monet’s series gives Lichtenstein’s artworks a controlled precision through the exacting application of the Benday dots. The hand painted dots appear irregular in their spacing and overlap in areas, which builds up a density and concentration in some sections, adding tonal variation.
