"It's as if by drawing the viewer into the cropped essence of this statue that most people have only seen captured from afar, the values the Statue of Liberty stands for – freedom, democracy, independence – become not just a symbol of America and its American dream but universal."

Roy Lichtenstein created I Love Liberty, a screenprint on Arches 88 paper,  in 1982, a period of time when his creative output was largely focused on what it meant to be American, exploring national emblems and motifs.
Living and working in New York, during one of its most artistically avant-garde periods, Lichtenstein here reinvents its most famous symbol, the Statue of Liberty. The print was actually produced in conjunction with a national television broadcast saluting American ideals and values but has come to be continuously re-examined as an artwork which reflects the essence of Americanism: freedom, democracy, independence and the possibilities of the American Dream.
Lichtenstein’s artwork, as the title suggests, is a visual love letter to the famous statue: he distorts our view of the recognisable image so we can only see a focused area of the statue’s facial features from our eye level below. Although the image is reduced to its basic pictorial elements, the viewer still feels her majestic stance as she proudly holds up her fiery torch: yet now we are left to project our own narratives onto the famous statue. With his pop art rendering of this omnipresent symbol, Lichtenstein requires the viewer to cast our own experiences of finding freedom, truth searching and the hope of opportunity onto this magnanimous sculpture.
Rendered in his characteristic pop art style, I Love Liberty is cloaked in bold bright yellow, graphic black and white delineated lines, and diagonal blue stripes creating the background pictorial planes. Lichtenstein simultaneously humours his own mass media, image appropriating art form, pop art, whilst also elevating it to a fine art form by rendering it onto the iconic symbol of all modern America’s values and ideals.
It's as if by drawing the viewer into the cropped essence of this statue that most people have only seen captured from afar, the values the Statue of Liberty stands for – freedom, democracy, independence – become not just a symbol of America and its American dream but universal.
