It is commonly understood that Sale Ends v2 was released as part of Pictures on Walls closing down in 2017.
Sale Ends was first created in 2006 for Banksy’s seminal show ‘Barely Legal’, which took place in a warehouse in Los Angeles in September 2006. The image appears to have an almost classical composition with hooded figures curtailing and bowing to a sign that reads “SALE ENDS”. Forgoing the Madonna and Christ that one would assume to be worshipped (given the renaissance quality of the surrounding figures) the work can be interpreted as a satire on how religion has been replaced by capitalism where consumer goods are worshipped by the masses.
Capitalism is a recurring theme in Banksy’s works and the infamous street artist holds no bars when approaching the subject. Works such as the Di-Faced Tenners and Very Little Helps highlight the dangers of powerful corporations and inequality. Explore other Banksy prints for sale.
