Andy Warho Black Rhinoceros ( F & S. ii 301) For Sale

Andy Warhol's screenprint Black Rhinoceros is part of his 1983 Endangered Species portfolio. As the name would imply, this show showcases animals that, at the time of its debut, were in danger of being extinct. Warhol was commissioned to produce the series by environmental campaigners Ronald Feldman and his wife Frayda Feldman in an effort to increase public awareness of environmental issues. The United States Endangered Species Act of 1973 was passed ten years before the end of the series, making the designation of "endangered" creatures a reality.

Warhol sourced the image for this screenprint from a 1982 New York Times article that detailed the reality of poaching, and its devastating impact on the rhino population. This rhino appears to be defeated; it appears to be bent over and resting on its right forelimb in a position of learned helplessness. It also gives the observer a hard look that seems to be conveying astonishment or desperation. The rhino's front horn, which is both red and black, is a major focal point. It sticks out resolutely, possibly acting as an embodiment of the animals' will to live and their resistance to extinction. The blue and teal covering its head and body, which evoke the melancholy that darker blues can, serve as evidence for this. The contrast created by the bright peach monochrome background amplifies even this, giving the rhino an unnatural, fantastical appearance. The ultimate product immortalises the image of the endangered animal into a Pop Art icon, evoking memories of Warhol's famous depictions of superstar celebrities like his Marilyn Monroe (1962) and Jackie Kennedy series (1964).
