Roy Lichtenstein Water Lilies Series (Corlett 286)
"When I did paintings based on Monet, I realised everyone would think that Monet was someone I could never do because his work has no outlines and it’s so Impressionistic. It’s laden with incredible nuance and a sense of the different times of day and it’s just completely different from my art. So, I don’t know, I smiled at the idea of making a mechanical Monet."

It’s laden with incredible nuance and a sense of the different times of day and it’s just completely different from my art. So, I don’t know, I smiled at the idea of making a mechanical Monet."Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies series was produced at the end of his career in 1992, just 6 years before his death. By this stage he had evolved his print techniques so extensively, even creating larger architectural works, his canon of work was considered part of art history. His widely acclaimed Water Lilies series pays homage to one of his main influences, Claude Monet’s original work, translating his famous impressionist style through the prism of pop art.The Water Lilies series comprises six screen prints on stainless steel. Largely also influenced by Monet’s Nympheas masterpiece, the works distil Monet’s famed floral subjects into the most essential pictorial elements, celebrating them with exaggerated contours and solid bands of saturated colour.Within this series, Lichtenstein not only references old masters and impressionist styles, but also the 19th Century Japanese woodcut tradition of Hokusai and Hiroshige, which also influenced Monet. The series elevates pop art as an art form with Lichtenstein’s signature wry humour instilled in each print. By focusing on the ephemeral and transient nature of Monet’s water lilies, which are a contrast to his early graphic work, Lichtenstein is arguably reflecting on the nature of his own artistic oeuvre in this series, created only a few years before his death. From flat surfaces, illusions of depth and texture, and his signature patterns, Lichtenstein offers fresh perspective on the water lily through this small edition of works on metal, where the light and colours are at constant interplay with one another. -
